Karate Definitions & Explanations

Basic Definitions

  • Kata

This is the basis for all of our karate training. It is a prearranged set of movements containing various strikes, blocks and grappling techniques designed to build correct muscle memory for self-defense. This way of teaching is becoming extremely hard to find. Most katas and kata training have been altered for the purpose of looking good for competition and has lost their true meaning and value.

  • Tuite Jitsu

Translated to joint manipulation, these are techniques that are from the different katas taught by the URKA and Wylie Karate, that are specifically used to restrain, control, or disable an attacker.

  • Kyusho Jitsu

Translated to vial points this is the art of advanced striking appications that are found throughout the katas that are used exclusively by the URKA and taught by the instructors at Wylie Karate.

  • Kobudo

Translated to ancient warrior way, this is Ancient Okinawan weapons training that is meant to be used in a way that augments the open-handed self-defense training.

The United Ryukyu Kempo Alliance

Ryukyu Kempo is a generic term for  Ancient Okinawan Fist. Before the founding of the different styles of Ryukyu Kempo, all of the karate was separated into three major styles: Naha-te, Shuri-te, and Tomari-te. The term Ryukyu Kempo encompasses all three of the original styles of Tode.
